The examples of German printing, which are the earliest known, were immediately surpassed in excel lence by the work executed in Italy, then the home 'of scholarship, whither the German printers naturally carried it. It is Italy, therefore, which exerted the first great influence in the Development of Printing as an Art, and the exhibition begins with books produced in this country.
