Excerpt from The ABC of Free Trade: An Address, Delivered to the West Ham Liberal Association, March 6, 1882
I hope no one will be offended at the title of this lecture. N o doubt I shall say many things which some of you have heard before but my object is to speak to those whose lives are so busy that they have no time to read up a subject of this kind, and trust rather to discussion, to speeches, and to lectures like this for-their political opinion than to books. Before entering on argumentative matter, however, I shall ask you to compare the old Protection days, and the state of things they produced, with the state of things we live under 5 and I shall try to account for the reaction which has arisen in these latter days against Free Trade. I shall then seek to furnish you with a few leading principles upon which, if you once grasp them, you may rely to save you from falling into the traps of those who would lead you astray after which I will deal with the allegations and proposals of the Fair Traders.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the historical origins of free trade and its impact on British businesses and society from 1815 until the time of its writing in 1882. The author takes a strong stance against the reaction against free trade policies, which were gaining traction as a result of economic depression. The author believes strongly that protectionist policies would be harmful to Britain and makes his case by contrasting the economic state of Britain during periods of free trade with its economic condition during periods of protectionism. He further argues that the apparent economic depression of the 1870s is not the result of free trade policies, but rather a result of poor harvests and other problems. Instead of seeking a solution to Britain's economic woes in protectionist policies, the author suggests that the government should turn its attention to resolving the issues causing the poor harvests and other economic problems. He believes that protectionist policies would backfire, harming not only consumers, but ultimately British businesses as well.
