Excerpt from The Authenticity of the Four Gospels
N ow, notwithstanding the elaborate character of the controversies which have been raised respecting this question, it will be found that the case can after all be very simply stated. It might be sup posed, from the manner in which the problem is generally discussed by Opponents of the Christian faith, that some elaborate and far-fetched argument is necessary in order to vindicate the received belief respecting the Gospels. There could not be a greater misapprehension. It is the case of our opponents that is marked by these characteristics.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a meticulous and deeply researched examination of one of the most contested subjects of modern biblical scholarship: the authenticity and authorship of the four canonical gospels. The author, a scholar whose expertise is recognized even by those who do not share his religious views, argues that the traditional authorship and datings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John have not been adequately challenged by modern critics and that external and internal evidence strongly supports belief in their authenticity and trustworthiness. The book begins with a discussion of the authorship of Luke and Acts, which the author believes to be the work of Luke, a traveling companion of the apostle Paul, who was in a position to have known the facts of Christ's life and ministry. The author then turns to the gospels of Matthew and Mark, arguing that Matthew was the author of the first gospel, which contains many of the sayings of Jesus, and that Mark's gospel draws heavily on the eyewitness testimony of the apostle Peter. Finally, he examines the gospel of John, which he believes was written by the apostle John and reflects the distinctive theological perspective of that disciple. The author emphasizes the importance of the gospels as historical records of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and provides a convincing defense of their authenticity and reliability. By carefully examining the historical and literary evidence, the author makes a persuasive case for believing that these gospels are the work of eyewitnesses who accurately recorded the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
