A sequence of integers and pointers (intermediate Language 1, or ill) that corresponds straightforwardly to the content of the exe cutable statements of the procedure, together with a collection of tree structures that represent the hierarchy of blocks, the set of declarations, the set of procedure entry-points, and similar con structs. The ill code is segmented by block nesting level as dis cussed below.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the expansive and complex journey undertaken by the author in their groundbreaking endeavor to create a compiler for the PL/I language on the Control Data 6600 computer. The compiler was constructed primarily in PL/I, a challenging feat given its inherent size and intricacy, providing a rigorous test for the author's ideas on compiler design and programming methodology. The result is a multi-pass compiler, featuring a novel combination of sequential and pointer-linked internal representations, meticulously designed to balance efficiency and flexibility. Beyond its technical contributions, the book delves into the intricate choices faced during the design process, the innovative use of preprocessors to automate tasks, and the challenges of error handling in such a large-scale project. The author's insights offer valuable lessons for anyone interested in compiler construction, programming methodology, or the intricacies of PL/I implementation, making this book an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and practitioners alike.
