Excerpt from Leaves From the Note-Book of Thomas Allen Reed, Vol. 1: Printed in the Reporting Style of Phonography
A v A 1 L, D 3 d \n x 3 fl. L~ to me. It was a printed circular enclosing a sheet full of shorthand char acters, a complete system. The schoolmaster was politely requested by the sender to examine the system, and, if be approved it, to adopt and teach it in his school; or, if unable to give attention to the subject, to hand the paper to any person of his acquaintance who might be likely to take an interest in it. The paper was no other than what old phonographers will remember as the original Penny Sheet, which must have tried the eyes and uzzled the understandings of earl phonographic students more than any alf-a-dozen other publications. {low I pored over those beautifully engraved but totally incomprehensible characters! There was the Iliad in a nut-shell, the entire system of Phonogra hy comprised in a sheet barely six inches square, with illustrations in nglish and I think in one or two foreign languages. The reader will hardly be surprised to hear that after sundry futile attempts to understand Phonography on this my first introduction to its mysteries, I gave up the task in despair. The author, I had no doubt, was a lunatic, and it was absurd to strain one's.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a fascinating glimpse into the early days of shorthand reporting and the life of Thomas Allen Reed, one of its pioneers. Having learned shorthand in his teens as a way to record speeches given by prominent men of the day, Reed went on to become a professional reporter. His tales of taking dictation at breakneck speeds and transcribing speeches late into the night, often with minimal assistance, offer a vivid insight into the challenges and triumphs of reporting in the mid-19th century. Beyond the practicalities of capturing the spoken word, the book also explores the evolution of shorthand as a system of writing, from its earliest incarnations to the development of Phonography, which Reed himself helped to spread throughout the country. Along the way, Reed recounts his encounters with fascinating individuals, from bishops to temperance advocates, providing a rich tapestry of social and cultural history. Through its exploration of the history of shorthand and the personal experiences of one of its most dedicated practitioners, this book shines a light on an often-overlooked aspect of journalism and the wider literary landscape of the Victorian era.
