Excerpt from Man and the Earth: A Simple Reader in Human Geography

You all know that in England it is warmer in summer than in winter. Perhaps you have also noticed that the shadow cast by a stick at noon, when the sun is shining, is not always the same length.

On mid-summer day the shadow is the shortest, while the shadow cast by the same stick on mid-winter's day is the longest.

If you draw a line the same length as the stick, and another at right-angles to it the same length as the shadow, and then join the ends, you will have a line which shows the direction the rays of light and heat take in coming from the sun to the earth.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book takes the reader on an expansive journey through the lives of people living in hot geographical regions, from the dense equatorial forests to the scorching deserts. The author focuses on how the natural environment shapes the culture, economy, and survival of human populations. The book explores the diversity of life in the tropical rainforest, where dense vegetation provides sustenance and shelter for its inhabitants, including pygmies and other indigenous groups. As the landscape transitions to grasslands, the author examines the nomadic herding practices of the Zulu people, their customs, and their conflicts with European colonizers. In the parched deserts, the author introduces the resilient Bedouin tribes, who have adapted to extreme conditions through their mastery of desert navigation and their reliance on oases. The book delves into the challenges faced by European settlers in these unforgiving environments, highlighting the obstacles of disease, infrastructure, and cultural differences. Throughout, the author skillfully weaves together historical accounts, anthropological observations, and geographical insights to present a comprehensive and engaging exploration of human adaptation to diverse hot climates.
