Excerpt from Decimal System for the Arrangement and Administration of Libraries
The following remarks on the subject of libraries are not written to present a new theory. They are intended only to be descriptive of a system which the writer has introduced into the Public Library of the City of Boston, with the approbation of his co-laborers in the Board of Trustees, and which has been in practical operation there since the summer of 1852.
The Trustees of the Library, from the establishment of the Board until the present time, having intrusted him with making "all arrangements and regulations needful for circulating the books and using the library," he has had the opportunity of originating from the very commencement the arrangement and working machinery of a large library, which exhibits a fair promise of extending its usefulness in the most liberal manner for the benefit of a great community of readers.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This 1856 book, by founding Boston Public Library Trustee Nathaniel Shurtleff, describes a revolutionary system for organizing and managing major reference and circulating libraries. Due to Shurtleffâs foresight, the core features of his system, notably his decimal system and fixed shelving, were adopted as standard practice at the Boston Public Library and shaped the blueprint for many modern libraries. Shurtleffâs system prioritized easy access and retrieval of books with the help of a consistent and intuitive item numbering system and standardized shelving in combination with an easily navigable catalog system to provide researchers with the utmost ease of research. The system's emphasis on creating a logical, orderly, and accessible library reflects a significant shift in librarianship during the 19th century. This book provides an in-depth look at the challenges faced by early librarians and offers a glimpse into the history of the modern library, making this volume a valuable resource for library historians and library professionals.
