The several essays here brought together appear at this time as the regular publication demanded of the in cumbent of the Kellogg University Fellowship of Amherst College at the expiration of his official term. As the table of contents shows, they purport to be contributions to a particular field of experimental psychology. What ever unity pervades the essays is determined rather by the general identity of subject-matter than by the con tinuous application of any single principle of interpreta tion. Still the attentive reader will note that the principles expressly defended in the first essay, though not explicitly reaffirmed later, are nowhere violated by the discus sions contained in the essays that follow. The general theoretical position may then be defined as nativistic, the nativism being of that moderate and elastic form which acknowledges the large and all-important role played by an organizing and systematizing experience. To deter mine the details of the particular experiences under which some of our visual and auditory spatial perceptions, illusory or otherwise, appear, has been everywhere the incitement to these investigations.
