Excerpt from Ohio: A Partial List of the Books in Its Library Relating to the State of Ohio
In September, 1891, the Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio bought of Peter G. Thomson, Esq., the books and pamphlets described in this catalogue, which he had prepared in expectation of their sale by auction or otherwise. Many copies of the catalogue were printed, but only a few were distributed.
It has seemed best to the Society to bind and send out a limited number of these catalogues for the use of kindred associations and libraries. In time, the Society hopes to issue a complete list of its books and pamphlets relating to the history of Ohio. This "Thomson Collection" and the works upon Ohio already in possession of the Society before the purchase from Mr. Thomson make its library very valuable for the study of the history of Ohio, and, incidently, of the whole West and Northwest. Perhaps, indeed, Mr. Thomson does not go too far in writing in a letter lately received from him: "You can safely say that our collection of Ohio books is the most complete in the world. I have been through all the collections, while working on my Bibliography, and I am sure the collection could not be duplicated from them all."
In a "Notice" prepared by Mr. Thomson for this catalogue, he says: "The collection consists of 796 bound volumes and 1182 unbound pamphlets. Many of the pamphlets are rare and valuable. The entire collection, with few exceptions, is handsomely bound by Pratt, Bedford, Matthews, Pawson & Nicholson, R. W. Smith, and other well-known binders, the binding alone costing upward of two thousand dollars."
The Society believes that this volume, though not containing a complete list of its books upon Ohio, will not be without use to those to whom it is sent.
