According to information obtained as a result of the Association's survey there are more than collections of specialized information scattered throughout America, and there is reason to believe that this figure represents but a small proportion of the total of such special col lection-s. The figure includes for the most part collections maintained for some special purpose, such as service to government, to business, or to education and science. No effort has been made to restrict the study to any one type or group of informational sources, the object having been to make the list as inclusive as possible.
The movement for special libraries is of comparatively recent growth, the large majority having come into existence during the last ten years. Some indication of the present geographical distribution may be obtained from the following list showing the number of special libraries located in 19 states.
