The author employs established results from queueing theory and applies them to a specific queueing network model that represents manufacturing systems where some tasks are done on a first-come, first-served basis (open customers) and other tasks circulate between stations (closed customers). Specifically, the author proves that as the number of closed customers grows large relative to the rate at which open customers arrive and receive service, the workload process at station one, which represents the manufacturing center, can be approximated by a one-dimensional reflected Brownian motion (RBM) on a finite interval. Furthermore, the author shows that the workload due to open and closed customers at station one are deterministically related and live in fixed proportions. These results have implications for the design and analysis of manufacturing systems, as they provide a way to approximate the behavior of complex systems using simpler models that are easier to analyze.
