Excerpt from Enterprise a Market-Like Task Scheduler for Distributed Computing Environments
In this paper we describe a prototype system called Enterprise that addresses those problems and present the results of analyzing one aspect of the problem of resource scheduling. Namely the scheduling of tasks on processors. This analysis was based on simulations of several alternative task scheduling algorithms operating under various network configurations and load conditions. Although we have focused on decentralized methods for scheduling tasks, our results on this topic are applicable to many forms of parallel computation, regardless of whether or not the processors are geographically separated and whether or not they share memory.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the concept of distributed computing environments, particularly focusing on the development of a remote process and task scheduling mechanism called Enterprise. This mechanism effectively allocates tasks among processors within a network of personal computers to improve processing speed and redundancy and simultaneously reduce reliance on dedicated server systems. Enterprise utilizes a 'market-like' approach, in which processors send 'requests for bids' on tasks to be completed, and other processors respond with bids including estimated completion times that reflect machine speed and files currently loaded. This approach allows for a more efficient and decentralized method of task scheduling and reduces the occurrence of bottlenecks caused by centralized decision-making. The book highlights the benefits of employing Enterprise's strategy within a distributed computing architecture by presenting a thorough analysis of the system and its algorithms. The analysis demonstrates that Enterprise significantly outperforms random assignment and more complex alternative scheduling methods. This book provides valuable insights into the design principles and performance analysis of distributed computing systems, making it an essential resource for researchers, practitioners, and students in the field of computer science and distributed systems. Its exploration of innovative scheduling approaches offers a significant contribution to the advancement of distributed computing and sets the stage for future developments in the area.
