Excerpt from An Inaugural Dissertation on Inflammation: Submitted to the Public Examination of the Faculty of Physic, Under the Authority of the Trustees of Columbia College, in the State of New-York, the Right Rev. Benjamin Moore, D.D. President; For the Degree of Doctor of Physic, on the First Day of May, 18
Introductory to the following Dissertation, I shall briefly consider the structure, as Well as se veral Of the motions of the solid parts of animal bodies, so far as these, from their vascularity, or from their being made up Of irritable and con tractile fibres, are enabled to perform all those mo tions which peculiarly belong to life. I do this, because it appears to me that the proximate cause of every degree of health is to be found in peculiar changes of motion, and correspondent variations Of structure, of the parts above mentioned.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book posits that inflammation is not merely a symptom of disease but a disease in and of itself. The author begins with a discussion of the structure and motion of animal solids as it relates to inflammation. The author's theory is rooted in the vital principle, which is stimulated by exciting causes to cause brous contraction. The author believes that the remote cause of inflammation is a quantity of action so great as to expend this vital principle faster than it can be supplied. Because the author theorizes inflammation as essentially debility, the cure is to treat the debility with astringents and stimulants. The author also discusses pain and heat as accidental, not essential, features of inflammation. This book is a significant contribution to the medical discussion of inflammation and provides deep insights into a disease that was once poorly understood.
