When we started our research activities in the field of know-how transfer by multinational corporations to developing countries in 1979, we intended to develop a system dynamics model to explain and design this problematic process from the view of a multinational corporation. Very soon we recognized, however, that the interactive and evolutionary character of this process was a major obstacle to its formulation in a system dynamics model.

The descriptive model shows that the know-how transfer process is a process of structural change resulting from the interaction of multinational corporations, local corporations, and developing countries. Based on this descriptive model, the author develops a formal mathematical model that uses spiral loops to represent the qualitative changes in interaction processes. The book analyzes different patterns of this process with model tests in order to generate policy and strategy recommendations for managers of multinational corporations and politicians in developing countries.
