Excerpt from An Inaugural Dissertation on the Puerperal Fever: Submitted to the Public Examination of the Faculty of Physic, Under the Authority of the Trustees of Columbia College, in the State of New-York; William Samuel Johnson, LL. D. President; For the Degree of Doctor of Physic; On the Fifth Day of May, 1795
The critical period at which this fever takes place, when febrile commotions are apt to be excited by various cad/es, 'jand the equivocal jymptoms which accompany it have afiorded room for que/iioning whether it be a primary or jecondaiy difeafe: fome writers have comi dered it as proceeding entirely from inflammation of the into/tines, uterus, Ede. Others have imagined it to be the confiquence of an ob/i'ruttion to the jecretion of milk, while the greater number have been inclined (for red/ens equally if not more plau/z'ble) to impute it to a fupprefzon of the lochia. If this fever is examined attentively, according to its natural courje, and indea pendently of the accidental concomitant jymptoms with which it is not eflentially connet'led, it may fafely be pronounced a primary dzfea/e of a particular type, and perhaps not the necefl'aty configuence of any of the can/es above mentioned.
