Excerpt from Elements of the Precision of Measurements and Graphical Methods
A chapter on the solution of illustrative problems has been added to assist students who find it necessary to work up the subject by themselves. The collection of problems has been compiled from recent examination papers. The chapter on Graphical Methods con tains specific directions for constructing graphs, and general directions for obtaining therefrom the functional relationship between two variables. For engineering students, as well as physicists, the method of logarithmic plotting will be found of wide application. In the Appendix several tables, of assistance in precision computations, have been added.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Delving into the realm of precision measurement, this book provides foundational knowledge for students and a valuable resource for engineers. It introduces concepts and methods for assessing the reliability of measurements, essential for scientific research and technical applications. The author emphasizes the importance of considering both determinate and indeterminate errors, explaining how to identify and eliminate the former and treat the latter using statistical methods. The book explores the concept of precision measures, including average deviation, fractional and percentage deviation, deviation of the mean, probable error, and mean error. It discusses the method of least squares and its application to data analysis, including the determination of weights and weighted means. The author also covers the statistical evaluation of residual errors and the rejection of doubtful observations. By presenting a clear understanding of precision measurement techniques, this book empowers readers to analyze data with confidence and make informed decisions based on reliable results. Its comprehensive approach and practical examples make it an invaluable guide for anyone seeking to enhance the precision of their measurements. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
