Excerpt from Notes on Physical Laboratory Experiments in Heat, Vol. 3
The following notes cover the experiments in Heat which are required of students taking the General Laboratory Course in Physics. The laboratory work is performed subsequent to or in some cases concurrently with the lecture course on Heat. Little or no attention is, therefore, devoted in these notes to theory, deduction of formulae, etc., a knowledge of which is presupposed. On the other hand a detailed discus sion is given of experimental methods, manipulation, sources of error and attainable precision, - these matters being regarded of paramount importance in all work performed in the physical laboratory at the Institute.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a practical, absolute method of thermometry based on hydrogen as the standard. Building on the work of others before him, the author presents a detailed discussion of experimental methods, manipulation, sources of error, and attainable precision. He encourages students to carefully study the provided notes before performing experiments, as preparation is essential for successful work in the physical laboratory. Rather than focusing on theory, deduction of formulae, etc., this book emphasizes experimental methods and the nature of glass best suited for constructing thermometers that can withstand high temperatures without change. Thermometers of various ranges are discussed, along with sources of error and necessary corrections. The author also discusses air thermometry of ordinary precision and provides problems at the end of each experiment to test student understanding. The author's scientific study of the characteristics of glass suitable for constructing thermometers has led to improvements in the field and his work is considered a standard reference for precision thermometry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
