The preparation of this work, which is intended especially to meet practical requirements and which appeared first at the end of 1896, and as a second edition1 in the beginning of 1899, has been urged upon me by several colleagues. I have attempted to treat of the province of the artificial production of cold and of its applications as they exist at the present time, but I have limited myself to European conditions which have come within my own experience.
