Excerpt from Number Work in Nature Study, Vol. 1: Part I
The introduction of elementary science into the grammar and primary grades of the public schools is destined to mark an important epoch in the history of school-teaching in this country. The scope of the work included under the head of natural science is so great that anything like a general introduction of it into the lower grades will necessitate a thorough reorganization of the course as it has long existed and now stands. The greatest problem at this time, therefore, is one of readjustment, and it is not easily solved; for the present course of study, as usually laid down, is fortified not only in the wisdom, but also in the prejudices and traditions of the past. The reorganization will be accomplished partly by a displacement of some of the studies once considered essential, but chiefly by a readjustment of the parts so that the course will form an organic whole.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a revolutionary approach to teaching elementary science by integrating mathematical concepts. Rather than focusing solely on arithmetic problems, the author proposes a series of formulas designed to be applied in the study of natural phenomena. The book challenges the traditional view of arithmetic as a purely abstract subject, arguing instead for its integral role in the development of accurate scientific understanding. The author delves into the relationship between form studies ââ â including number, language, and visual arts ââ â and thought studies, asserting that the former are essential for achieving clarity and precision in the latter. This emphasis on the importance of quantitative analysis within scientific inquiry reflects a broader shift in pedagogical thought during the late 19th century, when a growing interest in empirical observation led educators to re-evaluate the role of mathematics in the classroom. The book offers a wealth of practical problems and exercises, all rooted in natural science observations. These problems are designed to guide students in collecting data, conducting comparisons, and ultimately drawing meaningful conclusions. The author underscores the importance of interpreting results within the broader context of scientific inquiry, highlighting how the application of mathematical principles can help students identify patterns and discern underlying laws. The book's unique approach to science education, blending observation, measurement, and critical analysis, offers a valuable resource for educators seeking to cultivate a deeper understanding of the natural world in their students.
