Comme je l'ai fait pour plusieurs de mes précédents voya ges, je livre au public le journal de celui que j'ai entrepris du côté de Rome le 12 de septembre dernier, et qui s'est ter miné vers la mi janvier de cette année.
En imprimant ces conversations familières, tenues par la poste avec le personnel de ma maison, écrites la plupart du temps a la hâte, soit dans le compartiment d'un wagon de chemin de fer, soit dans le salon d'un vaisseau souvent balotte par la vague, soit dans la chambre d'une pension entre deux affaires pressantes, je n'ai jamais cru publier une oeuvre de littérature. Seulement je veux donner a la classe assez nombreuse des personnes qui s'intéressent à ce genre de rent un nouveau livre de lecture et la preuve que cette lecture n est pas tout-d-fait sans intérêt, c'est la rapidité avec laquelle mes publications précédentes en ce genre m'ont été enlevées d'entre les mains.
