Depuis la première édition de ce livre, j'en ai publié la suite et le complément sous le titre de Logique sociale.

Par là je crois avoir déjà répondu implicitement à certaines objections que la lecture des Lois de l'imitation avait pu faire naître. Il n'est cependant pas inutile de donner à ce sujet quelques brèves explications.

On m'a reproché çà et là d'avoir souvent appelé imitation des faits auxquelsce nom ne convient guère. Reproche qui m'étonne sous une plume philosophique. En effet, lorsque le philosophe a besoin d'un mot pour exprimer une généralisation nouvelle, il n'a que le choix entre deux partis: ou bien le néologisme, s'il ne peut faire autrement, ou bien, ce qui vaut beaucoup mieux sans contredit, l'extension du sens d'un ancien vocable. Toute la question est de savoir si j'ai étendu abusivement - je ne dis pas au point de vue des définitions de dictionnaire, mais d'après une notion plus profonde des choses - la signification du mot imitation.
