Les membres du cercle Saint-Simon m'ont demandé de leur faire une conférence sur un sujet économique. Au lieu d'une je leur en ai fait deux et c'est du Socialisme d'État que je leur ai parlé.
Je présente aujourd'hui ces conférences au public sans prétendre avoir fait un livre. Mon essai est inachevé; j'aurais fait une troisième conférence après la seconde, que je n'aurais pas encore épuisé le sujet. Je n'en aurais même pas terminé l'histoire.
