The arrangement is in order of difficulty, as nearly as I can judge without actual classroom test. Unfortunately, however, linguistic difficulty does not always coincide with intellectual difficulty. In order that the student or teacher may know whether he is reading living Spanish or merely nineteenth century Spanish, a date is given after each selection. In most cases it is the date of the first edition of the volume from which the selection is made, but in a few (breton, Mesonero, Pereda) it represents the actual year of composition.
