Excerpt from From Darkness to Light

Having been frequently requested by many persons interested in prison reform and the criminal classes, to write a complete record and history Of all the gaols which have been or are now in Montreal, and the wonderful changes and transformations which have been effected in their government during the period Of 145 years from the commencement Of the English regime in 1760, to the present day - I do so, for these reasons, lst. During my own long incumbency Of 42 years as the Chaplain, very many, nearly all, Of these changes have taken place, and 2nd. My former history Of the present Montreal Prison was almost entirely made up Of the sketches Of the Troubles Of 1837-8-9 The St. Alban's Raid - The Fenian Raids and Fullum Street Female Prison.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive and in-depth chronicle of the many prisons in Montreal from 1760 to 1907, analyzing their shift from harsh and terrifying places of punishment to the more humane and innovative prisons of the present day. The author draws parallels between the evolution of the Montreal prison system and the broader social and cultural changes that have occurred in Canada over the past two centuries. The book sheds light on the evolution of justice administration, human rights, and penology in Canada. Through this exploration, the author demonstrates the significant role that prisons have played in shaping the social fabric of Montreal, highlighting their gradual transformation from institutions focused solely on punishment to places that prioritize rehabilitation and reintegration.
