Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a response to the inquiry into the genuineness of the manuscript corrections and certain Shakespearean documents published by J. Payne Collier. The author, N. E. S. A. Hamilton of the British Museum, presents an investigation into the perceived discrepancies between the Old Corrector's textual emendations and the historical record. Hamilton argues that the corrections were not made by an Old Corrector in the seventeenth century, as Collier asserts, but rather by Collier himself. The author also shares his belief that Collier possibly fabricated or tampered with other documents, such as the Bridgewater House papers and a State Paper Office petition, the latter of which was officially deemed spurious by a group of scholars and officials. Through linguistic and historical analysis, Hamilton attempts to prove that Collier's work is a hoax, and should be reevaluated within the context of Shakespearean literary scholarship.
