Excerpt from Experimental Evolution: Lectures Delivered in the Summer School of Art and Science, University Hall, Edinburgh (August, 1891)
The following pages contain a record of lectures which I delivered in August, 1891, in Edinburgh, before the very cultivated and attentive audiences afforded by the Summer Selma! Of Art and Science which Professor Patrick Geddes is evolving with great expense of energy and devotion to science, aided by some personal friends whose interest he has well awakened in the organisation and diffusion of knowledge. I wish to be reckoned among these; and I took part with much pleasure in the proceedings, while on a visit to Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge, and London, where the French Government had com missioned me to investigate the University Extension Movement.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the development of the Evolutionary Theory from its speculative inception to its modern, scientific form. The author traces the gradual acceptance of evolution as the explanation for the diversity of life on Earth, largely crediting Darwin's On the Origin of Species with popularizing the concept. The author continues with a survey of the evidence for evolution from a variety of scientific disciplines, including anatomy, embryology, and paleontology, demonstrating the overwhelming scientific consensus that species change over time. The book concludes with a discussion of what caused this change over time, and provides an overview of some of the major evolutionary theories that have been proposed. The book provides a comprehensive history of evolutionary thought, from the earliest speculations through Darwin and into the 21st century.
