L'histoire a négligé trop longtemps les ouvrages des grands écrivains religieux, pour se renfermer dans l'étude des productions purement profanes. Il faut qu'elle se dirige, - on l'a compris de nos jours, - d'après des principes plus larges, et qu'elle soumette à son examen impartial tous les travaux comme toutes les institutions du passé: autrement il y aurait dans l'ensemble de ses résultats une lacune considérable, et le tableau qu'elle trace de la pensée humaine resterait incomplet et inachevé. A quoi servirait, en effet, d'analyser les écrits d'un Dion Chrysostome et d'un Thémiste, ceux d'un Macrobe et d'un Libanius, qui furent ou de simples artisans de paroles ou de pâles représentants d'une époque évanouie, si l'on dédaignait les ouvrages d'un Origène et d'un Augustin, en qui toute la vie intellectuelle et morale de leur temps se résuma d'une manière si éclatante?
Nous savons combien il est difficile de toucher à ces livres presque sacrés, sans s'exposer à se faire accuser, par les âmes religieuses, d'une témérité coupable, et par les esprits indépendants, dune timidité indigne de la science.
