Excerpt from George Canning and His Times
I do not intend, in the following pages, to write a detailed biography of Mr. Canning; they are de signed to be supplementary and explanatory - as a contribution to aid some future biographer.
My object is to discharge a duty to his memory, by setting forth his true character as a man and his policy as a statesman. In so doing, he will be made to speak for himself as much as possible. I shall not only not dwell on the well-known facts of his history.
