Excerpt from On the Application of Cast and Wrought Iron to Building Purposes
In the section on Cast-iron Beams there was little to add to what was contained in the first edition, beyond some tables of the results of experimental researches into the strength and constitution of iron, and its improvement by certain pro cesses of manufacture. In the course of my experience I have seen no reason to change the opinions I had previously expressed on the uncertain character of trussed girders, and I still advise the exercise of great caution in their employ ment, from the conviction that they are equally unsound in principle and dangerous in practice. In the section on trellis beams some additional examples have been added.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the use of iron in building construction, focusing primarily on cast-iron beams that support floors. The author, a renowned expert in the field, provides a historical overview of cast-iron beams, discussing their development and the experiments that led to improvements in their design. The book delves into the strengths and limitations of cast-iron beams, presenting the results of rigorous testing to determine their breaking points and resistance to deformation. The author also examines the concept of truss beams, which combine cast iron with wrought iron for increased strength. Through detailed analysis, the book highlights the challenges associated with truss beams, revealing the difficulties in balancing the tension of the wrought iron rods with the compression resistance of the cast iron. Ultimately, the book provides valuable insights into the design and construction of cast-iron beams, emphasizing the importance of understanding their material properties and the factors that affect their performance. By presenting experimental evidence and practical guidance, this book serves as an essential resource for engineers and architects involved in the construction of fireproof buildings. Its comprehensive examination of cast-iron beams contributes to a deeper understanding of their role in the history of building materials and structural engineering. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
