Excerpt from Alternating Current Machinery, Part I, Vol. 1: Instruction Paper
For a general system of power transmission electricity stands without a rival. The electric current passes over wires which are stationary, and which may be easily bent in turning corners and in avoiding obstructions. Wires are easily supported in various ways. Most important of all, the cost of electric transmission lines is relatively small, the power lost is small, and' the deprecia tion and maintenance charges against the lines are also relatively small. Moreover, electric power may be turned on, shut off, and controlled by devices that are more positive in action, more rapid and satisfactory in their operation, than those which must be used when other methods of transmitting power are employed. The apparatus for the control and protection of electrical machinery is simpler, more compact, and more reliable on the whole than that required for other systems of power transmission. Electrical transmission over long distances is thus more economical, more flexible, more easily adapted to a variety of uses, and withal more convenient, than any other system.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces you to alternating-current (AC) machinery, an essential topic in electrical engineering. Beginning with the history and principles of AC power systems and components, this book is suitable for those with no prior knowledge of the subject. The author establishes the historical context for the development of AC power systems, delving into the technical intricacies of generators, transmission, distribution, and utilization. The book then explores the mathematical and physical basis of AC calculations, focusing on the concepts of power, inductance, and capacity, before moving on to explore transformers and other AC machinery. The author describes how the unique properties of AC make it the preferred choice for long-distance power transmission and distribution, explaining how transformers can be used to step up and down voltage levels. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to AC machinery, offering valuable insights for students, engineers, and technicians seeking to understand the complexities of AC power systems. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
