Excerpt from The Tarbell: Introductory Geography
The principle, what is true of the whole is true of the parts, has governed the order of presentation. The book is inductive in the earlier parts, but mainly deductive in the later. The elementary notions founded upon experience and3 observation are introduced at the beginning. These are followed by a study of the methods of representing geographical facts.
When the child becomes acquainted with the geographical facts that may be known through his own experience at his home and in its vicinity, he needs to learn how these facts are represented upon maps, in order that from maps he may learn the geographical facts relating to other localities. When he can do this, he is ready to study geography from a book.
At this point of his advancement the earth, represented by the globe, is presented to his view as a unity to be studied, and thereafter his study is largely a descent from the general to the particular.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces the study of geography from a place of experience for the young student, building from the familiar to the theoretical. It begins by examining the foundational concepts of geography - direction, distance, and time - then proceeds to an exploration of familiar concepts such as hills, valleys, rivers, soil, climate, and plant and animal life. The author uses this framework of familiarity to introduce more complex ideas such as latitude, elevation, prevailing winds, and climate zones. Historical examples and thought-provoking questions accompany these ideas to provide historical context and encourage further inquiry. The author also emphasizes human geography through discussions of population, occupations, commerce, races of men, government, and concludes with historical information and maps about each continent, providing a well-rounded introduction to geography as a whole. Its inductive approach and progression from the known to the unknown lay a solid foundation in geography for young learners.
