Why then have these admitted advantages not led to a more universal adoption of these methods The answer seems to be that the required change of ideas, of manner of thought and Of notation, was too radical. It is well known that changes evolve slowly, and although to many, evolution is far too slow a process, the only way to. Proceed is to aid to the best of one's ability in bringing about the desired result.
One who has studied and labored over the applications of mathematical analysis to physical and geometrical prob lems, naturally has reluctance to discard the old familiar looking formulae and start anew in an unknown and radically different language.
