Excerpt from Report of Progress in Indiana County
But when the surveys. Of Cambria and Somerset counties in 1875 - 7 had revealed the startling truth that' there were several other important and persistent limestone horizons in the lower coal measures and in the barren measures, not one Of which could be made to correspond properly with the Ferriferous Limestone and Buhrstone iron ore of the Allegheny river country, it began to be suspected that too large a territorial extent had been ascribed to the latter; and Mr. Platt in this report has turned that suspicion into certainty. A reference to the word Ferriferous Lime stone' in the Index, will guide the reader to his demonstra tion that this deposit has a well defined southeastern limit beyond which it is useless to look for it, or for the iron ore lying upon its upper surface. It can only be found in the western and northern parts of Indiana County.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. In 1878, geologist W. G. Platt published a groundbreaking report on the bituminous coal fields of Indiana County, Pennsylvania. This area lies within the larger Allegheny River coal basin, where Platt's surveys mapped the complicated geological formations and identified a key limestone horizon that had previously eluded geologists. The discovery led to important insights into the structure of the coal basin, clarifying the extent and availability of coal reserves. The report also provided detailed information on the county's topography, drainage systems, and mineral resources, which were essential for the development of the region. Platt's work set the stage for further exploration and extraction of the vast coal resources in western Pennsylvania, which played a crucial role in the economic expansion of the United States.
