Un'ombra di mistero avvolge Luigi Pulci; una specie di fato pesa sulla sua testa. Mentre per altri concittadini suoi del quattrocento abbondano i documenti, particolarmente nell'Archivio di Stato di Firenze, ben poco si è trovato fin qui che valga ari illustrare la sua vita. Eppure tra i contemporanei è uno di quelli che destarono e destano curiosità maggiore! Il più ed il meglio fu fatto conoscere dal Milanesi; e dove egli ha, diciamo, vendemmiato, cioè nel carteggio Mediceo, io sono andato racimolando: lavoro lungo e faticoso, reso anche più ingrato dalle condizioni in cui versa quella parte dell'Archivio fiorentino.
