Excerpt from Brief Notes for Engineering Students
In a stationary liquid the unit pressure at all points in a horizontal plane is constant.
Suppose a particle is moved slowly from one point to an; other inthe same horizontal plane No work is done On the particle by gravity, since its distance from the center of the earth is not changed. If at any point the horizontal pressure on the particle is not the same on all sides, this difference of pressure would give it kinetic energy. It is evident that the liquid will not remain stationary if there is any difference in the unit pressure at points at the same level.
