Excerpt from Review of the Text of the American Standard Specifications for Steel
In drawing up the standard specifications the Committee were conservative, and included in the main, only such requirements as have been proved in practice to be of value or essential in determin in g whether or not the material is suited for the purpose intended. Contradictory and obscure clauses were eliminated, and tests of very doubtful value as a measure of the material when in service as well as those unnecessary in the present state of the art, were as far as possible omitted. The specifications were adopted as representing the American practice of to-day. They were adopted as American standards, subject to change, and will be reconsidered by the American Section of I. A. T. M. Whenever requirements of service be come more severe, better methods of testing are developed, or future improvements in manufacture render modifications necessary or advisable.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a comprehensive review of steel standards as adopted by the American Branch of Committee No. 1 of the International Association for Testing Materials between 1895 and 1903. It includes the text of the proposed American Standard Specifications for steel castings, axles, forgings, tires, rails, and structural steel, along with a critical review by a member of the committee of the reasons which governed the Committee in its decisions. The book sets out to detail a set of minimum standards for the steel industry, with a focus on the chemical and physical properties of steel products. With an eye toward future developments in metallurgy, the author takes a conservative approach, specifying only requirements that are essential at the time of publication. The book highlights the early collaboration between engineers and manufacturers in the United States, and positions their joint work within the larger movement to standardize steel specifications for international trade.
