Excerpt from Merlin: An Opera in Three Acts
The libretto of Merlin is the work of Siegfried Lipiner. It is in three acts in verse. The plot is as follows: The Devil, in order to beget a race which will drive all goodness out of the world, has forced the purest virgin on earth into a union with him. The fruit of this union is Merlin. But his mother's purity prevails in Merlin's character, and hence, instead of furthering the Devil's schemes, he combats them. He becomes one of the Knights of the Round Table. Through his supernatural gifts he is enabled to give victory to King Arthur over his heathen enemies. Com batting Merlin is the Devil through the agency of 3. Demon whom Merlin holds enslaved. The Demon learns through the all-wise woman, the Fay Morgana, that Merlin will lose his power if he should become enamored of a woman. How Merlin's fall is accomplished and how he is saved from perdition by the sacrifice of the very woman through whom the Demon hoped to bring about the seer's ruin are the main points of the story.
