Excerpt from Conscience (Conscience)
About this time Hector Malot resolved not to write fiction any more. He announced this determination in a card published in the journal, Le T emps, May 25, 1895. It was then maliciously stated that M. Malot his retired from business after having accumulated a fortune. However, he took up his pen again and pub lished a history of his literary life: Le Roman de mes Romans besides two volumes of fiction, l'amour dominateur and Pages choisies works which showed that, in the language of Holy Writ, his eye was not dimmed nor his natural force abated, and afiorded him a triumph over his slanderers.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the life of Dr. Saniel through a series of events that constantly test his principles against his ambitions. A poor country boy in Paris to become a doctor, he battles privation and mounting debts as he tries to establish himself. When his upholsterer threatens legal action to repossess the furniture for his apartment, he is forced to accept help from a ruthless moneylender named Cafe. The price of this aid soon becomes apparent as Cafe proposes marriage to Saniel, suggesting a widow of forty or a young woman with a child. The author delves into the ethical dilemmas faced by the characters. Saniel is torn between gratitude to Cafe, who provided respite from prosecution, and his repulsion at Cafe's true nature. He must also confront the idea of marrying for financial security rather than love. This book is a gripping tale of ambition, morality and the compromises one must consider on the path to success.
