Excerpt from A Contribution to the Oceanography of the Pacific: Compiled From Data Collected by the United States Steamer Nero While Engaged in the Survey of a Route for a Trans-Pacific Cable
In the early part of the year 1899 the U. S. S. Zvero, a steam collier of tons displacement, which had been purchased for use during the spanish-american war, was fitted out by the Navy Department, equipped with the necessary apparatus, and dispatched from San Francisco under the command of Commander Charles Belknap, U. S. Navy, with instruction-s to survey a route for a telegraph cable between the United States, the Philippine Islands, and Japan.
On account of the illness of Commander Belknap, he was relieved from command on the arrival of the ship at Manila by Lieut. Com mander H. M. Hodges, U. S. Navy, who remained in charge of the survey until its completion.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an in-depth account of an 1899 US Navy expedition to map a trans-Pacific cable route, revealing fascinating insights into the ocean floor. The scientific team meticulously documented their findings, including data on depth, temperature, and the composition of sediment at various depths along multiple survey lines. Their observations deepen our understanding of Pacific Ocean topography, revealing massive peaks and abyssal plains, and provide valuable information for cable laying. The book also sheds light on key concepts in oceanography, such as the distribution of red clay, globigerina ooze, and diatom ooze, and their relationship to depth and distance from land, ultimately enriching our knowledge of the Pacific's complex marine environment.
