She became an independent nation in the year 1821, under what was known as the plan of Iguala by that government, and to which constitution, be it said to the ever lasting honor of the American colonies, they were always loyal; and when resort was had by them to arms the step was taken with reluctance, and only for the protection of their rights guaranteed under that constitution.
