Two articles suggesting means for making art the ally of Nature are appropriate to the season. The first contributor, Mr. Eugene Scho-en, gives a condensed history of the formal gar den, Italian, English, Dutch and French: not, however, with the purpose of stating facts pure and simple, but altogether with that of showing how the special features of each style: cascades, artifi cial lakes, terraces, lawns and parterres may be used in developing the park system of American cities. The second, by Professor Joakim Reinhard, discusses two opposing systems of treating nat ural beauties. The paper further describes the Park at Fredriks borg, a suburb of Copenhagen, which contains the tombs of the Kings of Denmark. Professor Reinhard's article pleases by its picturesque style, and seems brightened and colored by the flowers of which it treats at length.
