Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating study of Phrenology, a 19th-century theory exploring the connection between the size and shape of certain brain regions and an individual's character and abilities. The theory proposes a complex map of 35 organs, each corresponding to a specific mental faculty. Organized into three classes, Affective, Sentient, and Intellectual, these faculties range from emotions like love and veneration to cognitive abilities such as calculation and comparison. The author presents the theory in an accessible manner, explaining the purported functions and combinations of the different organs. They emphasize that the relative size of these organs, as determined by careful measurement of the skull, provides insights into an individual's unique blend of strengths and weaknesses. The text explores various combinations of organ sizes and their potential impact on personality traits. For instance, a highly developed Approbativeness organ is said to indicate a strong desire for recognition and approval, while a prominent Conscientiousness organ suggests a predisposition for morality and justice. The book also touches upon the hereditary nature of these traits and the possibility of modifying them through education and experience. Ultimately, this book offers a glimpse into a once-popular theory that attempted to establish a scientific basis for understanding human behavior. By dissecting the purported functions of the brain's various regions, the author provides a fascinating insight into how people of the 19th century endeavored to unravel the complexities of the human mind.
