Excerpt from The Performance of a Harrington Forced Draft Chain Grate Stoker: A Thesis
Poor efficiency is the general result when boilers are run considerably under or over rating. Boiler manufacturers have found from experience that for a certain number of square feet of heating surface their is a definite amount of grate area required. In other words the ratio between heating surface and grate area is fixed. Therefore, when a plant is operating at half rating, the grate area is twice as large as that required for correct operation; and vice versa, when running at twice rating the grate area is only half the theoretically required.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive study of the Harrington' forged draft chain grate stoker, a widely used coal-fired boiler in the early 20th century. The author provides a detailed analysis of the stoker's design, operation, and performance, drawing on data from a series of eight-hour tests conducted on a boiler equipped with the stoker. The book also includes a discussion of the broader context of coal-fired boiler technology at the time, including issues such as air pollution and the efficiency of combustion. The author's insights into the Harrington' stoker and the challenges of boiler operation in the early 20th century provide valuable historical context for understanding the development of modern boiler technology.
