The first edition of Locomotive Engine Running and Management was published in 1885, thirty years ago. Many important changes have been made on the de sign and operation of the locomotive and its attach ments in these thirty years, and in my opinion the time had arrived for a thorough revision of the book which is now offered to the railway world as practically a new book suitable for meeting the needs of modern practice. The changes on air-brake mechanism have been revolutionary and a section on electric mechanism has been added to meet the development of that art.
Locomotive Engine Running and Management has been an intellectual ladder which many ambitious men have climbed on their way to higher positions than those enjoyed in train service. The author cherishes the hope that the revised edition will prove as helpful as those which have gone before it.
