Excerpt from A Handy Book for the Calculation of Strains in Girders and Similar Structures, and Their Strength: Consisting of Formulae and Corresponding Diagrams, With Numerous Details for Practical Application, Etc;, Etc
There is, again, a more general application of the Moments of Rupture, and Shearing Forces, to open-webbed girders of all kinds, than has hitherto been attempted.
It was originally intended to divide the whole work into three sections or chapters, similar to those actually adopted only for the middle portion (pp. 24 to which chapters should correspond with the various processes in the design of a bridge, thus making the very arrangement of the work a general guide. But it was afterwards deemed advisable, as will be seen, to place the Moments of Rupture, and Shearing Forces, by themselves at the commencement, as a basis upon which the remainder is principally founded.
