Excerpt from Selected Poems of Robert Burns: With an Introduction by Andrew Lang
HE text of the Poems in this Selection is in accordance with the earliest texts of Kilmar nock, of Edinburgh, and of the scattered tracts and the additions made by Currie and others. Where Burns originally wrote a coarse line, which he afterwards replaced by another, the second reading is given, as more in harmony with modern taste.
The Editor has to thank Mrs. Ogilby, for collating the texts, and Mr. Craibe Angus, for kindly lend ing examples of early and rare editions. Because these editions are rare, and that the curious may see the text as nearly as possible as the poet saw it.
