Inhaltsangabe

This book provides a foundational treatise on Modern Elementary Geometry, a field the author helped to establish that covers geometric problems that can be solved with basic algebra skills. The book's subject is developed in two parts and builds upon the knowledge of the first six books of Euclid, typically learned by students transitioning from secondary school to university. The first part introduces the concept of double geometric meaning, a cornerstone of modern elementary geometry, which posits that geometric terms can simultaneously denote both magnitudes and figures. The second part introduces the idea of double generation of geometric figures, demonstrating that every geometric figure can be generated by the movement of a point or a line. The author explores the implications of these concepts across various theoretical problems and gives detailed instructions for practical constructions. By providing a systematic exposition of Modern Elementary Geometry, this book serves as an excellent resource for students and practitioners alike, offering a thorough understanding of a subject vital to future geometric discovery.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Chapters on the Modern Geometry of the Point, Line, and Circle, Vol. 1: Being the Substance of Lectures Delivered in the University of Dublin to the Candidates for Honors of the First Year in Arts

The work now offered to the public contains, as its title indicates, the substance of lectures de livered for some years in the University of Dublin to the candidates for mathematical honors of the first year in arts; and supposes, accordingly, a previous acquaintance only with the first six books of the Elements of Euclid, and with just that amount of the principles of Elementary Algebra essential to an intelligent conception of the nature of signs, and of the meaning and use of the ordi nary symbols of operation and quantity.

The acknowledged want of a systematic treatise on Modern Elementary Geometry, adapted to the requirements of students unacquainted with the higher processes of Algebraic Analysis, which of late years have been applied so successfully to the extension of geometrical knowledge, has induced the author to come forward with the present attempt to supply the deficiency. The only existing work of the same nature in the English language with which he is acquainted, the Principles of Modern Geometry, of the late lamented Dr. Mulcahy.
