An overview of the International Practical Temperature Scale of 1968 (IPTS â"68), which defines temperature through its fundamental physical quantity, thermodynamic temperature, is given with an emphasis on the methods of temperature dissemination using this system. Also discussed are the technical and economical advantages of gallium as a secondary reference point within the IPTS â"68. The author provides descriptions of the standards and fixed points used to define temperatures in the scale and discusses how the gallium point fits into the system along with its role in the manufacture and quality control of electronic thermometers and its application for temperature measurements in the clinical laboratory.
