Excerpt from Ludus Coventriæ, or the Plaie Called Corpus Christi: Cotton Ms. Vespasian D. VIII
There are three other handwritings to be found in the MS (1) that of the interpolated quire E (if. 51, 52) containing the conversation between Joseph and his kinsmen in the Betrothal of Mary play (2) that of the interpolated folios 95, 96 in the iliagi play, and of the interpolated fo. 112 containing the Opening of the Baptism play (3) that of the Assumption play.1 The first is a rough cursive hand of the. Close-of the century decidedly later than that of the body of the ms. This writer uses the full th form, and neither the h nor the 3 appears in this passage. The second is also a cursive hand, but of a less untidy character. Halliwell Speaks of it as a more recent hand and this writer was, as will be seen, at work as a correctorof the ms. After its compilation but the opinion of authorities is that the hand cannot be said to belong to a later type than the original scribe's. This writer uses the t (in the later y form) and the full ih form in about the same proportion as the chief scribe like him he uses the 3 in the word 3c, but he uses the forms you and your where the other invariably uses 3i (you) and your. This writer uses a curious form of final 3.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of medieval English drama, focusing on a unique collection of mystery plays known as the 'Ludus Coventriae'. Unlike other cycles associated with trade guilds, the origins and purpose of this collection have long puzzled scholars. The author meticulously examines the manuscript, exploring its physical characteristics, handwriting, and revisions to unravel the process of its compilation. Evidence suggests the plays were likely performed as a stationary group rather than in a procession, and the book provides a vivid picture of 15th-century theatrical practices. Central to the discussion is the interplay between two distinct sets of plays within the collection: one focusing on the Virgin Mary and drawing from ecclesiastical sources, the other presenting a more popular and straightforward narrative based on apocryphal gospels. The author's analysis reveals how these sets were interwoven, resulting in a complex tapestry of dramatic expression. Through a close reading of the text, the book sheds light on the evolution of religious drama, the adaptation of biblical and legendary material, and the creative choices made by medieval playwrights and compilers. Ultimately, it offers valuable insights into the cultural and religious significance of these plays within the broader context of medieval English society.
