Inhaltsangabe

Discover the story behind a Browning phrase-book designed for quick, thoughtful study. This historical sketch outlines how a group of editors organized a practical reference drawn from Browning’s poetic and dramatic works, aiming to help students and readers refresh the mind with memorable lines.

The excerpt describes the collaboration of societies and editors, from early plans to adapt a concordance into a concise phrase-book. It explains the shift from repeating phrases to a one-word index and shows how publishing needs shaped revisions and cross-references to different Riverside and Cambridge editions. It also notes editorial decisions, the handling of punctuation, and the goal of making Browning’s language accessible for leisure reading or scholarly use.
